COMMERCIAL BEAUTY SYSTEM CHALLENGE To put it across blatantly the standard of beauty system in contemporary terms. CONCEPT The Macdonaldnization of beauty system. CONTEXT With the increasing rage in cosmetic surgery, and the increasing numbers of pageant held in China, i decided to illustrate it in a rather commercialize style to complete this piece in the most ‘efficient’, ‘commodify’ manner with a few color pencils. A homogenous Caucasian-looking features for all in the near future as the cosmetic surgical choices are hinting at that direction? If we observed carefully, the criteria for beauty selection is almost composed of a certain angular facial structure or a certain body type. Through the study of face, and media, I gather these ‘composition’ and dressed it in a traditional china-type ‘chongsam’. The contrasting ‘yellow’ hair and the ‘red’ dress are juxtaposed to bring out MacDonaldnization of the beauty system. The beauty conception has all to do with an ethnocentric definition tainted with the occasional shift in political, economical and cultural power and less to do with a beauty of substance and wit for “world peace”. Ingrained into our minds are selections of what constitute beauty form a stark contrast to other species if the judges are them. Do you think the fish or dog or monkey will be able differentiate or be bothered with your beauty or ugliness like Shallow Hal? Or is it your fear or insecurities? I was once told by a Tioman village headman's wife that a monkey can smell your fear and decide whether or not to be friendly with you or not. The 'chongsam' is based on a design tailored by my mother for my elder sister's wedding.
