SPACE AND TIME
CHALLENGE
The idea is to generate an image that captures the memories of two fleeting moment and merged them into one. That is accomplishing all these without losing its essence.
CONCEPT
Space can still be established with sound even if we lose all our senses except for hearing. Time on the other hand never really erases the memories; it only makes living with it slightly easier. In this case, the idea is to maintain and capture the spirit of those eyes without colors.
CONTEXT
Lithograph on paper
I was watching an episode of National Geographic channel trying to locate the recent whereabouts of a 12-year-old female who fled Afghanistan to a refugee camp in Pakistan in 1983. After watching it at around December 2003, her presently older and weathered face remains fresh in my mind.
Based on the iconic photograph Steve McCurry used for the cover of 1985 June issue of National Geographic, i drew her while recalling my own cognitive facial impression i've had earlier on from the cable vision. Strangely, i managed to make her look older than she is in the 85' picture, but younger than her contemporary look i last seen on the television screen. Maybe this is fueled by my fear of being labeled a human copier!
Those eyes that are tinted with slight orange have a lingering red alertness like the color of the ragged garment impersonating the immortality of those haunted in that era. I chose the medium charcoal and graphite pencils to see if i can achieve the same physicality of those piercing, protective and fearful green eyes without any colors. It is my own little personal experiment to understand colors and Ludwig Wittgenstein...
