INTER-FACE

CHALLENGE

To show the inter-connectivity and interaction of an increasing embedded modern world.

CONCEPT

The idea is to create tessellations of a man and woman of different ethnicities and culture with maximally utilized space with no gap in between. Hence, this lack of space will send an encrypted undertone whereby respect is essential for co-existence in increasingly cramped area.

CONTEXT

Computer graphic. Tessellations of women and men. “Inter-face” adopts the methodology of “figure-ground” and “tessellations” approach popularized by the contemporary Scott E. Kim and the late M.C.Escher. It is created to simulate our fear of the unknown and insecurities towards each one other that can be breached and bridged. Given the ever-heightening speed of our contemporary fast-forwarded everyday lives, we have forgotten to seek for the times when people “learned to learn, learnt to unlearn” forging an “in-ert-llectual” better world…

I know you probably hear this a thousand times or less. We lived in an increasingly embedded world as our geographical distance is shrunk by technological progress in communication. The interactions between beings are taking place at a higher frequency. The sometimes lacks of understanding of our place on this earth, can cast doubt on our selves and the unknown others; or how to be steadfast to our identity imagined on – nationality, sexuality, ethnicity etc.

At times, we can use a little space for ourselves if there is any left. If not, maybe we can spare a little tolerance, understanding and appreciation for each other cultures, ethnicities or even egos squeezed into close contact. Maybe, one day, our differences can be celebrated through our common yearning for unity and equality in a knowledgeable Machiavelli world.

In inter-face, the environment changes relative to the identities changes within. However, the identity within a character resists changes and remains intact physiologically. When different people are dislocated in similar dimension, or cross over to a different dimension, the ever-shifting change is inevitable. If so, a portal of humble interchange for resistance and change might be useful.

To wrap it up, a parallel paraphrase of two great philosophers of the East and West is perhaps “the way” to go. Laozi prior spin-off of Yin-Yang co-existence can be a stage of nothinglessness whereby everything can be nothing in a unitary condition. Heraclitus realizes that opposites are necessary for life, but they are unified in a system of balanced exchanges. Welcome to the transformations and impermanence of “Inter-face”.
