[E]LLUSIVE SELF-REFLECTION[S]
CHALLENGE
How can the altered ego be ever captured?
CONCEPT
Relativity as a mirrored state of altered ego.
CONTEXT
Photography .
My artistic search for the meaning of life deals with the illusive theme of self-reflection not far off from the philosopher Chuang-Tzu’s cliché butterfly dream.
Firstly, employing a figure-ground approach, I design a graphical tessellation of an altered ego reminiscent of M.C.Escher. This is then printed into two pieces of glossy reflective stills. Under soft lightings, using the reflection[s] within the stills due to the glossiness’ of the material itself, it is then photographed to project the “conscious self” in the third-dimension (reflection-reflection) and the “sub-conscious self” in the forth-dimension (reflection-reflection-reflection) and fifth-dimension (reflection-reflection-reflection-reflection). These in[de]finite possibilities of reflection[s] upon reflection[s] truly s[t]imulate a multiplicity of perceptions.
Viewed through the lenses of the camera, the blur at the border is created by going beyond the zoom range of the camera. ISO settings are placed to minimal to generate digital noise so as to create a grainy texture. Together with its grayscale colour, the blown-out final print shall embrace a sullen mood. Manipulating the depth of the field, the final print ought to appear blurry (parallels the reflective matt chrome frames) when viewed close by, and visibly clear (parallels the reflective glass) when seen afar. [E]llusive Self-Reflection[s] , through a flattened visual imagery, shifts the observer’s attention back and forth between its intrinsic dimensions (hence, the in[de]finite possibilities of reflection[s] ) demonstrating a concept of relativity and our deception of our (own) existence layered with facades – the elusive self.
