SHALLOW HAL SHALLOWNESS

CHALLENGE

To use the taboo theme of religion and portray peace and beauty without having to deal with the violent threats channeled at Danish newspaper after the publication of Prophet Muhammad.

CONCEPT

Create a two contrasting-looking sage ( real/fake, old/young, wrinkled/smooth ) saint praying for peace. Better still; throw in a halo shaped in an iconic peace sign. The difference being the negative connotations of a cracker associated with a crown versus the positive connotation of a peace halo floating above the head.

CONTEXT

Color pencils on paper.

"There is no way i can appreciate inner beauty!" exclaimed a friend of mine.

After hearing that remark, i decided to draw a picture of Mother Teresa using color pencils to redefine conception of beauty that can be in the substance of dedication. I was also partly motivated by David, an artistic Korean medical student who did a "portrait" of a shoulder blade completed with vessels and muscles using the same medium...

I hope you can better understand the movie 'Shallow Hal' next time and appreciate the inevitable usage of the archive of "beauty system" as forms to reflect the kindness or the wickedness from within the characters...
